Travel Smart: How to Enjoy a Full Vacation Without Breaking the Bank

We all dream of going on vacation — and when we finally get the chance, we want to enjoy everything our destination has to offer. From the excitement of the plane ride to indulging in delicious food, relaxing in nice hotels, exploring tourist attractions, and even doing a little shopping — it’s all part of the experience.
But let’s be honest — these things can get expensive. In today’s economy, most people can’t afford to splurge on everything. The good news? With a few clever tweaks, you can stretch your budget while still having a rich, memorable trip.
Here’s how I do it.

Smart Ways to Save on Vacation

• Book Your Flights Early
The earlier you book, the more you save. Simple, but effective.
You can also join mileage programs if available, for both your flights and hotel stays. By doing so, you could save hundreds of thousands of naira. Smart travellers start planning their vacation a year in advance.

• Pack Light & Pack Smart
Take only the clothes you really need. Carry a bacco bag to nest your luggage or use as a laundry basket. It’s especially convenient when taking clothes to the laundromat. As convenient as those big boxes with wheels are, they can be quite heavy, some  weighing up to 5kg, which adds to your baggage allowance and could cost you extra. Opt for lighter luggage 🧳 even if its not as pretty; No one really cares. Don’t forget your soaps, creams, and grooming essentials. Don't carry travel size. They are harder to use and run out quickly, forcing you to buy more at exorbitant prices. Instead, carry regular sizes and use comfortably. Just make sure to pack them properly sealing with plastic bags to prevent leaks.

• Skip the Hotel & Mall Dining
Eating at hotels or mall restaurants is pricey. Explore local food spots instead — they’re cheaper and often more authentic. Use Google and ChatGpt to discover local places to eat. It's not only a great way to save money, but also an opportunity to explore new spots, immerse yourself in local customs, and meet new people. Of course, excersize caution and follow safety protocols so you dont fall victim to local scams or petty crimes.

• Do Laundry in Town
Many hotels charge extra for laundry. Instead, find a local laundromat. For small items like underwear, wash them yourself in a small bucket and hang them to dry in your bathroom.

• Shop at the Local Market
This is where you’ll find great bargains and unique souvenirs — not overpriced tourist shops. Be careful not to over-shop as this could lead to extra baggage fees. Some clever travellers wait untill they get home before buying gifts for family and friends. Its much cheaper and saves you the hassle of logistics.

• Use Public Transport
With the help of ChatGPT and Google Maps, you can easily navigate buses and trains. Avoid taxis — they’ll eat into your budget.

• Handle Your Hair Before You Go
If you braid your hair before your trip, you’ll save money and avoid the stress of finding a salon in a foreign place.

• Bring Your Own Essentials
A fresh pair of bathroom slippers, your own towel, and even your favorite toiletries can save you from unnecessary purchases. I personally feel uncomfortable using hotel towels, especially after discovering that the small ones are actually meant for moping excess water off the bathroom floor. I had been using them, thinking most guests preferred the larger ones. Eww!

• Stay Connected Smartly
Use social media apps with voice/video calling features to connect with family back home. Buy your own internet package instead of relying on public or hotel WiFi — except when streaming Netflix on the hotel TV. When you return home, remember to change your passwords.

• Fly Economy, Stay Comfortably
I’d rather spend less on the flight and more on a secure, comfortable hotel.

Where I Don’t Mind Spending Money

• Cleaning & Personal Comfort
I always buy dish soap, detergents, bleach, scouring powder, a medium-long brush, and sponges. They’re for washing dishes, underwear, and even the toilet. I sometimes buy plates, cups, and even a small water heater for tea. I recently discovered that some guests actually use the water heaters meant for tea and coffee, in rooms to boil their underwear. Double Eww! From now on, I'am pacjaging a portable travel heater for my trips. Seriously! The more you know.

• Unique Experiences
Activities like boat rides, guided tours, or local festivals make a trip unforgettable — and they’re worth spending on.

• Clothes & Gifts
I enjoy buying clothes for myself and thoughtful gifts for loved ones.

• A Good Hotel
Security and comfort matter, so I’m willing to pay extra for a well-rated place to stay.

Final Thought
Vacations don’t have to drain your bank account. With a little planning and a few smart choices, you can enjoy the best parts of your trip while staying within your budget. The key is to know where to save — and where to spend.
